Different types of containers are used in transport. Others are used for transport by sea and others by air. Customers are often not sure what type of container will be suitable. What are the standard sizes and dimensions of the containers?
Cars, electronic equipment, building materials, raw materials, chemical products for food use and pallets of various goods. These are cargoes transported using a standard metal container. Thanks to the use of standard and international dimensions, the containers are suitable for transport by road, rail and waterway. Thanks to the standardization, it is possible to reload more easily e.g. from sea to inland waterway units or trucks.
TEU, (from (Twenty feet Equivalent Unit)which is the standard size of a 20 foot container, used worldwide as a basic unit. Common container sizes are
- 20 feet (about 6 meters = 1 TEU);
- 40 feet (2 TEU = 1 FEU).
FEU is Fourty feet Equivalent Unit, i.e. a 40 foot long container. Apart from TEU and FEU there are also other containers with different dimensions. Below is a brief overview of the most important of them.
Standard container - dry
The standard container is made of steel and is designed for general cargo such as cartons or pallets which are not too long, too wide, too high or too heavy. It is also called (in English). dry container) - a "dry container".
Special dimensions: Flat rack container
How is it best to transport a heavy load or one that does not fit into a standard container? With a Flat Rack Container! Such units are equipped with folding walls, corner supports and rail fastenings in the lower part to which the load is secured with belts or chains.
Refrigerated container - Reefer
For some products, such as foodstuffs, films, plants or pharmaceuticals, it is important to maintain the right temperature during transport. This is made possible by specialised refrigerated containers equipped with refrigeration units.
Open Top Container - Open Top
The container does not have a metal roof, it is covered with a waterproof tarpaulin, which is fastened with ropes. This type of container is equipped with internal lashings, which prevents the cargo from moving. It is suitable for high or long loads.
