There are also other charges in the transport sector. Below is an overview of the most popular ones.

What types of charges are there in transport?

Fuel surcharge

In the transport sector, there are a number of charges. One of them is the fuel charge. The price of diesel oil is constantly fluctuating and none of the carriers have any influence on it. It is common practice to ring-fence the fuel surcharge in order to offset the constantly changing costs. In many cases this is the only possible solution.

Safety fee

Following the events of September 11, 2001, an international security programme was implemented at the initiative of the United States. It is aimed at preventing all terrorist activities that take place in port and airport areas. For this reason, investments have been made to increase the level of security. However, an additional fee, e.g. per container (based on ISPS), is charged to recover the costs incurred. International Ship & Portfacility Security(i.e. the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) for maritime transport, and the security charge for air freight.

Fuel additive in maritime transport

A similar fuel charge applies to maritime transport. When fuel costs are subject to significant increases, the shipowner applies the so-called fuel surcharge, BAF. Bunker Adjustment Factor) or BUC. Bunker Contribution) in order to minimise the risks caused by fuel price volatility.

Dangerous Goods Appendix and IMO Appendix

For dangerous goods the consignor should attach the dangerous goods declaration (DGD, IMO). On the basis of these data the shipowner or the airline shall determine whether the goods can be accepted for transport. If the data are not sent on time or if the cargoes are sent incorrectly, they may not be accepted, which is why it is so important to provide a correctly completed declaration on time. Moreover, due to the classification of the goods as dangerous, the airline, port or airport is entitled to charge additional fees. This is directly related to the additional activities and procedures that are necessary for planning the receipt of goods in the terminal as well as on board the vessel, truck or plane.
